To choose hypoallergenic gold plated earrings, look for nickel-free posts (titanium, surgical steel or niobium), a thick gold layer over a safe base metal, and a seller who states the materials and the return policy in writing. If a listing leaves any of these out, ask before you pay. Then use the comparison table below to match a brand to your need.
The short answer for UAE buyers with sensitive ears
The post and the metal under the gold matter more than the word “hypoallergenic”. Blomdahl names pure medical titanium. Yumeira and Siân Jewellery state a stainless steel base with 18K plating. Luna Dura sells 925 sterling silver. Amoura and Aurora Souq leave material details to check on each listing. We checked every brand’s own pages on 4 November 2026. This guide is not medical advice.
What “hypoallergenic” really means (and what it doesn’t guarantee)
“Hypoallergenic” is a marketing term with no single legal standard in the UAE. It means a product is less likely to cause a reaction, not that it never will. Two brands can use the same word for very different materials.
The reaction most people with sensitive ears are dealing with is nickel contact dermatitis. Dermatology bodies such as the American Academy of Dermatology and the UK’s NHS describe nickel as a leading cause of jewellery allergy and name earrings and earring backs as common exposure points. Symptoms usually show as itching, redness or a rash where the metal sits.
The European Union has limited how much nickel earring posts and other skin-contact jewellery may release since the EU Nickel Directive, now part of the REACH regulation. Many international brands make products to that rule, but it is not UAE law, so you still need to check each product.
What the label does not tell you
- Which part is hypoallergenic. The front of a stud can be fine while the post or butterfly back is a different alloy.
- How long it stays that way. Plating wears, and the metal underneath can end up touching your skin.
- Whether it was tested. A claim is not a nickel-release test or a certificate. If a brand mentions testing, ask to see the documents.
Gold plated vs gold vermeil vs gold filled vs solid gold: which is safest for sensitive ears
These four terms describe different constructions. The definitions below come from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. They help you check what a term should mean, but they are not UAE legal standards, and UAE sellers may use the words more loosely.
| Term | What it is | What sits under the gold | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold plated / electroplate | A thin gold layer. FTC guidance describes gold electroplate as at least 0.175 microns of gold applied electrolytically. | Any metal: brass, copper, stainless steel, silver | FTC: Buying Platinum, Gold and Silver Jewelry |
| Gold vermeil | Gold of at least 10 karat over sterling silver, at least as thick as 2.5 microns of fine gold | Sterling silver | 16 CFR Part 23 (FTC Jewelry Guides) |
| Gold filled | A bonded gold layer described by weight. FTC guidance uses a 1/20 ratio under specified conditions. | Usually brass or another base alloy | FTC Jewelry Guides Statement of Basis and Purpose, 2018 |
| Solid (karat) gold | Gold mixed with other metals all the way through | No separate base. Ask about the alloy, especially for white gold. | Ask the jeweller |
Our position: a thicker gold layer helps, because it takes longer to wear through. But a thick layer won’t protect you once it thins, so the post and base metal are what decide whether your ears still cope months later.

Base metals and posts to look for (and nickel to avoid)
Dermatology guidance lists surgical-grade stainless steel, titanium and sterling silver among the usual alternatives for people who react to nickel. Here is how each one behaves in an earring.
Medical grade titanium posts
Titanium is the material most brands for sensitive skin build around. Look for “pure titanium” or “medical titanium” on the product page itself, not just in the brand’s general marketing.
Surgical and stainless steel
Stainless steel bases are common in waterproof gold plated brands sold in the UAE. Stainless steel can contain nickel. Some grades hold the nickel inside the alloy better than others, so “stainless steel” alone does not mean nickel-free. Ask for the grade and whether the brand says the product is nickel-free.
Niobium
Niobium is used in some piercing jewellery and is generally considered skin-friendly. None of the six brands we checked lists it on the pages we reviewed, so you will need to ask for it.
Sterling silver
925 sterling silver is a common alternative and the required base for true vermeil. It can tarnish faster in humid air, and some pieces are rhodium plated, so check what the finish is.
Brass and copper
Many fashion pieces use brass or copper under the gold. They don’t cause problems for everyone, but sellers often don’t say what alloy they used. If your ears react easily, ask before you buy.
How we compared brands: criteria and sources
On 4 November 2026 we read each brand’s homepage, its contact or policy page, and the earring or product pages its site links to. We used only what those pages say. Where a fact was missing, we wrote “Not stated on the brand’s page” rather than guessing.
We did not lab-test any product. No source we found gives a reliable safety ranking across brands or allergy figures for the UAE. So we compare brands on what they tell you about their materials, not on a safety score we can’t back up.

Brand notes
- Blomdahl: based on its site, a Swedish brand. It lists an ISO 13485 certificate and has nickel-free collections for women, men and children. The finish is a “gold coloured coating”, not gold plating. Its pages don’t show a UAE price or UAE delivery, so check with the brand before you plan on buying from here.
- Yumeira: says its jewellery is waterproof and crafted in Thailand. Its earrings page has advice for wearing earrings under a hijab and in the shower or at the gym.
- Siân Jewellery: calls itself waterproof, hypoallergenic and tarnish free, and says every piece is checked before it ships in Siân packaging. You can buy from it in the UAE, with next-day delivery in Dubai.
- Luna Dura: has a boutique in Al Durrah Tower on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai, and you can buy online in AED. Its earring range is sterling silver rather than gold plated.
- Amoura Jewellers: sells in AED, ships across the UAE and lets you pay cash on delivery. We could not confirm earring materials or prices from the pages we checked.
Best for: clear picks by need
- Medical-grade sensitivity: Blomdahl. Its product page names pure medical titanium and says nickel-free. Check first that it can deliver to the UAE.
- Everyday wear: Yumeira. It states stainless steel with layered 18K plating, waterproof and nickel-free.
- Gifting: Siân Jewellery. Pieces arrive in Siân packaging ready to give, with next-day Dubai delivery.
- Sterling silver base: Luna Dura. Its earring pages name 925 silver, and you can visit the Dubai boutique.
- Cash on delivery: Amoura Jewellers. It offers COD in the UAE.
- Budget and matching sets: Aurora Souq. Earrings start at AED 40, with six other gold plated categories to match.
- Fine jewellery: none of the pages we checked show solid gold earrings, so we don’t name a pick here.

Where Aurora Souq fits: gold plated earrings range and what to confirm on each listing
What it offers: gold plated rings, earrings, necklaces, bangles, chains, long necklaces and bracelets. Our gold plated earrings start at AED 40, as our online gold plated jewellery guide notes. Some stud listings say hypoallergenic.
What to confirm on each listing: the post metal, the base metal, the plating thickness and whether the pair is nickel-free. Our listings don’t state these consistently yet. Don’t assume one product tells you about another: the Gold-Plated Textured Bangle Set lists copper and brass, but that tells you nothing about any earring.
- Read the Description and Additional information tabs on the listing.
- If details are missing, ask us in writing through the Aurora Souq contact page.
- If we can’t confirm the post for that pair and you react to nickel, choose a titanium option instead.
Best suited to: shoppers without a diagnosed allergy who want a budget look or matching sets. For brides, see our gold plated wedding jewellery guide.
Common mistakes when buying earrings for sensitive ears
- Trusting “hypoallergenic” in the product title. The cost can be a swollen earlobe and a pair you can’t return.
- Checking the front, not the back. Butterfly backs and hook wires are often made from a different metal.
- Assuming “18K” means solid gold. On plated jewellery it describes only the surface.
- Treating a seller’s reply as proof. A written answer is useful, but it is not a lab test. Ask for documents if testing is claimed.
- Judging the metal from photos. A loupe or close-up shows how a piece is made, never what it is made of.

How to make gold plated earrings last in UAE heat and humidity
Gold plating wears down over time on every brand. Once it thins, the base metal can show through and touch your skin. Sweat, sunscreen and perfume make it wear faster. Tarnish-resistant jewellery lasts longer, but it doesn’t last forever.
- Put earrings on last, after perfume, lotion and sunscreen have dried.
- Avoid water unless the brand says the pair is waterproof. Even then, pools and the sea are hard on plating.
- Wipe them after sweating with a soft, dry cloth.
- Store them dry and apart from other pieces, in a pouch or lined compartment, not in the bathroom.
- Watch the post for colour change. If it turns darker or coppery and your ears itch, stop wearing that pair.

Pre-purchase checklist and what to ask a seller
| Check | Pass if |
|---|---|
| Post and back metal | Named: titanium, niobium, a stated steel grade or sterling silver |
| Base under the gold | Named, not just “alloy” |
| Plating type | Plated, vermeil or filled is stated, plus layers or thickness if given |
| Nickel-free claim | Stated for this exact product |
| Returns | The earring return rule is clear before you pay |
Written seller inquiry template
Hello, I have sensitive ears and react to nickel. For this product, could you confirm in writing: (1) the metal of the post and the back, (2) the base metal under the gold, (3) the plating type, karat and thickness if known, (4) whether it is nickel-free and whether you have test documentation, and (5) your return policy for earrings. Thank you.
Keep the reply. It is not proof, but it helps if you need to report a fault later.
When a plated pair is enough, and when you need titanium or a dermatologist
A plated pair on a named steel or silver base is often enough if you only get mild itching from cheap jewellery and wear earrings for a few hours at a time.
Choose titanium posts if your earlobes react within a day or you sleep in your earrings.
See a dermatologist if you get blistering, weeping skin or a rash that stays after you take the earrings out. Patch testing can confirm the allergen, which no label can do. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
Ready to buy hypoallergenic gold plated earrings? Pick two pairs from the table and send the five-question template to each seller. If one of them is an Aurora Souq earring listing, send it through our contact page. We’ll tell you what we can confirm for that exact pair, and what we can’t.
FAQ
Are hypoallergenic gold plated earrings safe for nickel allergy?
They can be, but the label alone doesn't prove it. What matters is the post and the base metal under the gold, because plating wears off. Look for a named nickel-free post in titanium, niobium or a stated steel grade, and get the materials confirmed in writing. This is not medical advice.
Is 'hypoallergenic' a regulated term in the UAE?
No. It is a marketing term with no single legal standard in the UAE. It means a product is less likely to cause a reaction, not that it never will. Check the post metal, base metal and nickel-free claim stated on each product page.
Are flat-back earrings better for sensitive ears?
Flat-back earrings can be more comfortable for sleeping and leave no butterfly back pressing on the skin. But the metal still matters more than the shape. Check that the post, the flat disc and any threaded part are named nickel-free materials such as titanium.
Can I wear waterproof gold plated earrings in the shower or pool?
Only if the brand says the pair is waterproof, as Yumeira and Siân Jewellery do. Even then, chlorine, sea salt and soap make plating wear faster. Take them off to swim, wipe them after sweating and store them dry so they last longer.
Should I use implant-grade titanium for a new piercing?
New piercings are usually done with implant-grade or medical titanium jewellery by a professional piercer, and gold plated fashion earrings are not meant for healing piercings. Wait until the piercing has fully healed before switching, and ask your piercer or doctor if unsure.
Can I return earrings if they irritate my ears?
Often not. Many sellers won't take back earrings for hygiene reasons unless they are faulty. Siân Jewellery states this on its product pages. Read the return policy and get the materials confirmed in writing before you order.
