Gold plated ornaments are pieces of jewellery with a thin layer of gold over a base metal such as brass, copper or silver. They cost less than solid gold and are suited to fashion and occasion wear. If you are shopping for gold plated ornaments in the UAE, check the base metal, plating wording, size and return terms on every listing before you buy.

This guide, published by Aurora Souq, covers how plating compares with gold filled, vermeil and solid gold, how long it lasts in UAE heat, how to choose each type and where to buy, including when another retailer suits you better than we do.

Last updated: November 2026. Editorial note: the retailer comparison uses information each retailer publishes on its own website, checked in November 2026. Prices, stock and policies change, so confirm details on the live product and policy pages before you order.

Gold plated vs gold filled vs gold vermeil vs solid gold

These four terms get mixed up on product pages, and they describe very different products. The table uses widely accepted industry definitions. Plating thickness varies by product and maker, so always read the specific listing.

Type What it is Relative price Typical durability Skin-sensitivity considerations
Gold plated A thin layer of gold, usually electroplated, over a base metal such as brass, copper, stainless steel or silver Lowest Shortest. Wears with friction, sweat and chemicals; lifespan depends on thickness Once plating wears, skin touches the base metal. Brass and copper can leave green marks, and some bases may contain nickel
Gold filled A much thicker layer of gold bonded to a base metal (often brass) with heat and pressure Low to mid Lasts far longer than standard plating with normal care The thick layer keeps the base metal away from skin for longer
Gold vermeil Gold plating over a sterling silver base, usually thicker than fashion plating Mid Better than standard plating, but still wears in time. Worn areas show silver The silver base suits many people who react to brass or nickel
Solid gold Gold alloy all the way through, sold by karat (22k means 22 parts gold out of 24) Highest. Gold rate plus making charges Does not wear through. High-karat pieces can scratch or bend Generally well tolerated; lower-karat alloys contain other metals

A note on plating thickness (microns)

Plating thickness is measured in microns, thousandths of a millimetre. There is no single UAE standard for fashion jewellery, and many listings don’t state it. As a reference point, the US Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides describe vermeil as sterling silver coated with gold at least 2.5 microns thick. Fashion “flash” plating is commonly well under 1 micron (an industry estimate, not a fixed rule). If a seller states microns, a higher number usually means longer wear; if they don’t, ask.

Watch the wording: “22k gold plated” is not 22k gold

When a listing says “22k gold plated”, the karat describes the gold in the thin surface layer, not the whole piece. A search for “22k gold plated jewellery sets” on Amazon.ae returned 556 results, mixing many brands, materials and prices. None of that wording means solid 22k gold.

Also watch for “gold-tone”, which describes a colour, not a material. Use a quick gold plated vs solid gold price comparison as a sense check: solid gold is priced by the gram, so a low price on a large set confirms it is plated or gold-tone.

How long does gold plating last in the UAE climate?

No single lifespan applies. A thick plate on a pendant worn twice a month can look new for years. A thin plate on a ring worn every day may show the base metal within weeks.

What wears gold plating down

  • Plating thickness. Thicker plating lasts longer; see the micron note above.
  • Base metal. Brass and copper react with moisture and air, so once the gold wears they darken or leave green marks. A silver base wears more gracefully.
  • Friction. Rings rub door handles and steering wheels, bracelets rub desks, chains rub collars.
  • Heat and sweat. Long UAE summers mean hours of sweat on skin, and its salts speed up wear.
  • Water and chemicals. Chlorinated pools, sea water, perfume, lotions and sunscreen all attack plating.
  • Frequency of wear. Daily wear uses up plating faster than occasional wear.

Anti-tarnish jewellery care that works

  1. Put jewellery on last. Apply perfume, lotion and sunscreen first and let them dry.
  2. Remove before swimming, showering and sleeping. Chlorine, soap and overnight friction do most of the damage.
  3. Take it off for the gym. Sweat is a bigger risk in UAE heat than in cooler climates.
  4. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing. Skip abrasive polishes and silver dips, which strip plating.
  5. Store dry and separate. Use one pouch or lined compartment per piece so they don’t scratch each other.

Our gold-plated textured bangle set listing gives the same advice: keep pieces away from perfume, water and harsh chemicals, wipe with a soft dry cloth and store them dry, apart from other jewellery.

Care by piece type

Rings and bracelets take the most friction, so remove them for cleaning and cooking. Pierced earrings touch sensitive skin, so wipe the posts and keep them dry. Necklaces and chains rub on clothing, so lay them flat and avoid daily wear over sequins or heavy embroidery.

Gold plated ornaments by type: rings, earrings, necklaces, chains, bangles and bracelets

Each type faces different wear, so choose differently for each. The “best for” lines are general styling advice, not claims about any store’s stock.

Rings

Plating wears fastest on the inner band and palm side. Raised or textured designs hide wear better than plain polished bands. Best for: statement and occasion rings rather than all-day wear.

Earrings

Earrings see little friction, so they are among the longest-lasting plated pieces. Check the post or hook material if your ears are sensitive. Best for: bold shapes such as jhumkas, hoops and drops without solid-gold weight or cost.

Necklaces

Pendants and collar pieces sit on skin, so perfume and sweat matter more than friction. Check chain length and clasp type. Best for: matching sets for weddings, Eid and parties.

Long necklaces

These rest mostly on clothing, which spares them sweat but adds fabric friction. Best for: layering, and wearing over plain kaftans, abayas or dresses.

Chains

Fine chains are light but can kink or snag, so look for a sturdy clasp. Best for: daily wear and layering, if removed before showering. Our guide to gold plated chains in Dubai covers chain styles and lengths.

Bangles

Bangles knock against each other, so textured sets hide wear better than high polish. If you want the best gold plated bangles in Dubai for an event, measure your hand first. Best for: weddings, festive sets and stacking.

Bracelets

The underside wears first from desks and laptops. Adjustable chains with extension links ease sizing. Best for: light everyday stacking and gifts when you don’t know the size.

Where to buy gold plated ornaments in UAE: retailer comparison

Each store below is described on the same five criteria, using what its own website states. Where a detail isn’t published on its main pages, the table says to check the live site.

Best for: which store suits which buyer

Start from what matters most to you, then pick the store that publishes it.

  • If price comparison matters most, Amazon.ae gives you the most listings side by side. The trade-off is consistency: sellers differ, so judge each item on its stated materials and seller, not the search page.
  • If you want to pay cash on delivery while ordering other things, Noon or Namshi fit, since both advertise cash on delivery and free returns. Confirm the jewellery item itself is returnable.
  • If you need it in Dubai within hours and want a designer label, Ounass states 2-hour Dubai delivery and 30-day free returns. Expect luxury pricing rather than fashion plating prices.
  • If you want a recognised crystal brand, go to Swarovski. It is the better choice when the brand name matters more than a gold plated look.
  • If you want to browse only gold plated ornaments by category, with the base metal on the listing, Aurora Souq is built for that.
  • If you want resale or savings value, none of these is the right buy. Choose hallmarked solid gold from a gold jeweller.

How to choose: sizing, base metal, skin sensitivity, occasion and budget

Ring sizes: UK, US, EU and mm

Use a ring-size chart or printable ring sizer, and measure in the evening when fingers are slightly larger in UAE heat. EU sizes equal the inner circumference in millimetres. Approximate equivalents (check each retailer’s own chart):

US UK EU (circumference, mm) Inner diameter (mm)
5 J½ 49 15.7
6 L½ 52 16.5
7 N½ 54 17.3
8 P½ 57 18.1
9 R½ 59 19.0

Bracelets, bangles and chains

  • Bracelets: wrap a flexible measuring tape around the wrist bone and add a little room.
  • Bangles: tuck your thumb towards your little finger, measure around the widest part of the hand, and compare with the listing’s inner diameter or circumference.
  • Necklaces and chains: check length in centimetres and hold a tape round your neck to see where it sits.

Base metal and skin sensitivity

Brass and copper bases are affordable and give a warm colour. Silver (vermeil) and stainless steel bases react less. For hypoallergenic gold plated chains and bracelets in the UAE, look for a stated nickel-free, sterling silver or stainless steel base; “hypoallergenic” alone is not a standard.

Occasion and budget

For outfits worn a few times a year, plated sets give the most look for the money. For daily wear, spend more on thicker plating or vermeil, or choose low-friction pieces like earrings and pendants. Budget per outfit when building a matching set.

What to check before you buy gold plated ornaments in the UAE

The colour in a photo tells you almost nothing. Run each listing through this material transparency checklist:

  1. Base metal named (brass, copper, silver, stainless steel), not just “alloy”.
  2. Plating wording: plated, vermeil, filled or only “gold-tone”.
  3. Plating thickness in microns, if stated.
  4. Dimensions: ring size, bangle diameter, chain length, earring drop.
  5. Closure: lobster clasp, screw back, push back, hook or open bangle.
  6. Seller identity: on marketplaces, who sells and ships it.
  7. Close-up photos of clasp and back.
  8. Warranty: whether plating wear is covered, and for how long.
  9. Reviews mentioning tarnish, colour change or skin reactions.

Return policy and delivery

Read the returns page before checkout. Earrings are often non-returnable for hygiene reasons, and sale items may be excluded. For a wedding or Eid date, check the delivery window and leave spare days for a size exchange.

Common mistakes and what they cost

  • Reading “22k gold plated” as 22k gold: you expect resale value that doesn’t exist.
  • Skipping the base metal: a brass daily ring can mean green fingers within weeks.
  • Guessing bangle size: a bangle that won’t pass your knuckles is useless on the day.
  • Swimming in plated pieces: chlorine and salt water can strip thin plating in one trip.
  • One pouch for everything: pieces scratch each other and wear faster.

Why consider Aurora Souq for gold plated ornaments

Aurora Souq focuses on gold plated ornaments in seven categories: Rings, Earrings, Necklace, Bangles, Chains, Long Necklace and Bracelets. Our listings name the base metal. The gold-plated filigree long necklace and the textured bangle set are both described as copper and brass with a gold-plated finish, and the necklace listing answers “Is this necklace solid gold?” with a clear no.

Our floral drop necklace and earring set listing states UAE delivery and a one-year replacement warranty. Terms can differ by item, so check the product page and live returns policy, especially for earrings. Our listings don’t state plating thickness in microns; ask our team if that matters to you. If you want a designer label, a crystal brand or solid gold, the retailers above suit you better.

Ready to choose? Measure your ring, wrist or hand size with the steps above, then browse Aurora Souq’s gold plated ornaments by category and run your shortlist through the checklist. For anything not on the product page, such as micron thickness or nickel content, ask through the Aurora Souq contact page before you order.

FAQ

How thick is gold plating on fashion jewellery?

It varies by product and is often not stated. Plating is measured in microns. Fashion flash plating is commonly under 1 micron, while the US FTC Jewelry Guides describe vermeil as at least 2.5 microns of gold over sterling silver. If a listing doesn't give a figure, ask the seller before buying a piece for daily wear.

What is the difference between gold plated and gold vermeil?

Gold plated means a thin gold layer over any base metal, often brass or copper. Gold vermeil is gold plating over sterling silver, usually thicker. Vermeil costs more, lasts longer and suits more sensitive skin, because worn areas show silver rather than a reactive brass or copper base.

How do I judge a gold plated jewellery listing?

Check that it names the base metal, uses precise wording such as gold plated or vermeil rather than gold-tone, and gives dimensions, closure type, seller identity, warranty and return terms. Look for close-up photos and reviews mentioning tarnish or skin reactions. Missing details are a reason to ask before ordering.

Will gold plated jewellery turn my skin green?

It can, once the gold layer wears thin and skin touches a brass or copper base. Sweat, heat and lotions speed this up. Wipe pieces after wearing, keep them away from perfume and water, and choose a silver or stainless steel base for pieces you wear every day.

Can I shower or swim wearing gold plated ornaments?

No. Chlorine, salt water, soap and shampoo all wear down gold plating, and repeated exposure can strip a thin layer quickly. Remove rings, chains, bangles and bracelets before showering, swimming or the beach, and dry any piece that gets wet straight away with a soft cloth.

Does gold plated jewellery have resale value?

Very little. The gold layer is so thin that the gold content is negligible, and buyers pay for gold by weight and purity. Treat gold plated ornaments as fashion or occasion jewellery, and buy hallmarked solid gold if you want something to resell or hold as savings.
